Description

Italian company Bialetti first started putting the Moka Express into Italian homes in 1933. Since then, over 100's of millions have been made. Have a star in your house with this coffee maker that has even made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records.

It's not really espresso, but moka coffee. In Italy, nearly everyone has one.

There are different sizes, but this is the most famous model that will create a 2 ounce espresso in four or five minutes. It has been said that the smaller the moka machine, the better the coffee.

To use, add water to the lower chamber and put a finely ground coffee in the filter. Heat the Moka Express, but on a lowish heat for best results. The moka makes it way into the upper chamber. This could take about 10 minutes if you do it slowly. You don't want to boil the coffee, so take it off heat as soon as all the water moves up (or slightly before if you want to time it like a pro and let the remaining heat finish the process off).

Italian made using aluminium.

2,996 reviewers rate it 4.5 / 5 (17 March 2015)

Extra Tips

  • Don't wash with detergent or in the dishwasher, just rinse it with water.
  • Use often for the best results. If the Moka Express has been dormant a while, make a weak coffee and throw it out to bring it back to good working order.
  • Use the best water you can get your hands on.
  • Use a medium grind and some good coffee beans. Don't compress the coffee as this may impede the process.
  • Too much heat can leave you with bitter or burnt coffee and damage the rubber seal. The seal may eventually need replacing if you use it for a long time.
  • Illy is a good brand to try, although expensive. Some roasts will not work so well for moka, so you may have to experiment.

Negatives (some of these may have come from fake copies, of which there are many. This should be coming direct from Amazon, so hopefully there will be no issues)

  • A few people have questioned the quality of this product and where it is made. Making sure it "ships from and is sold by Amazon.com" should ensure sure it is a legit item.
  • Some people have mentioned the bottom discoloring or rusting. They probably didn't rinse it under the tap.
  • Some mention the seal not working.
  • Someone reported a rubber taste from the seal.
  • Someone claims it is easy to burn your hand on the Moka Express.
  • Don't forget and leave it on the stove, but remember we don't want a super high heat or else we end up with bad coffee.
  • Some reports of bad smells from the metal.
